URGENT ACTION ALERT
The US Congress is currently in the process of passing the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act (SAVE). The urgency of this situation cannot be overstated.
SAVE Act will:
- require a person registering to vote to present proof of citizenship in person (no online or mail registration). Proof of citizenship might include a birth certificate or a passport. Other commonly held ID’s (driver’s license, State ID) will not meet the requirement. This means that every time a person has to re-register – for instance, when a person moves or changes their name, the person would have to present - in person - proof of citizenship.
- harm the eight in ten married women have changed their surname, meaning they do not possess a birth certificate that matches their current legal name and therefore could not present it as valid proof of citizenship.
- severely limit members of the Military who are not able to provide proof of citizenship, in person, when serving overseas.
- disproportionately affect the ability to register for the half of Americans who do not have a passport. It would impact tribal citizens who would not be able to register using their Tribal ID alone.
- prevent survivors of natural disasters from registering due to the loss of critical documents, if they are not able to get replacement documentation in time.
The League urges you to use your voice and call your Representative and Senators. Your opinion matters, and we ask you to ask them to vote no on the SAVE act.
